Overview
The Data Engineering Manager leads and mentors a team of data engineers responsible for designing, developing, and delivering domain-aligned data products on Microsoft Fabric. This is a player-coach role: you will contribute hands-on to building scalable pipelines, lakehouses, and warehouses, while also guiding your team to excel in best practices and collaborative delivery. Reporting to the Director of Data and Analytics, you will shape our data mesh architecture, ensure data products align with business objectives, and mature analytics capabilities and culture.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of data engineers delivering domain-owned data products.
• Foster a culture of ownership, quality, and collaboration aligned with data mesh principles.
• Define team goals, measure performance, and support career development.
Technical Strategy & Execution
• Collaborate with the Director, Data & Analytics, to define and execute our Microsoft Fabric-based data mesh strategy.
• Oversee the design, development, and lifecycle management of data products—ensuring they are well-documented, reusable, and driving value.
• Establish data engineering best practices for version control, CI/CD pipelines, testing, and monitoring within the Fabric environment.
• Familiarity implementing governance tools, data catalogs, and lineage tracking in Fabric.
Hands-On Data Engineering
• Build and optimize Fabric Lakehouses/Warehouses and Medallion Architecture pipelines.
• Develop and maintain ingestion, transformation, and orchestration pipelines using Fabric Data Factory, Fabric Notebooks, and T-SQL.
• Implement and manage Fabric Shortcuts for integrating Dynamics 365 F&O, Dataverse, and other enterprise data sources.
• Ensure adherence to data governance policies, including data lineage, access control, and quality validation.
• Serve as a control owner for the controls and processes pertaining to compliance (e.g. SOX) and audit requirements for SNLD’s analytics data environment.
Collaboration
• Work with the team’s business analyst, data product owners, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical deliverables and robust data products.
• Develop and promote a self-service analytics culture by enabling business teams to easily access and use trusted data products.
• Engage with application development teams to provision data products that serve SNDL’s application (ex. e-commerce) data needs.
Qualifications
Required
• 5+ years in data engineering with at least 2+ years managing data engineering teams.
• Proven experience building and delivering data products in a data mesh architecture.
• Hands-on expertise with Microsoft Fabric components (Lakehouse, Data Warehouse, Data Factory)
• Strong SQL and Stored Procedure development skills and experience with medallion/layered architecture/data warehouse patterns.
• Strong Azure DevOps skills to deliver CI/CD data pipelines with an emphasis on version control and segregation of duties pertaining to code promotion to production environments.
• Experience integrating Fabric with enterprise systems such as Dynamics 365 F&O or similar ERP/CRM platforms.
• Strong leadership skills with a track record of coaching and developing high-performing data engineering teams.
• Knowledge of Power BI semantic models and report development is desirable.
• Familiarity with governance tools, data catalogs, and lineage tracking in Fabric.
